The ability to generalizeis a gift many of us take for granted, and this is the biggest challenge Billy has.  I fall short often through my frustration with Billy’s challenge in this area, since generalizingtakes me no effort.

The ability to generalizeis to relate new stimuli to past experience.  When I mean past it sometimes is only a few minutes.  This is why mathematics has always been a head-banging experience.  “But you just did this, it’s the same thing, and don’t you remember” are some common and unhelpful phrases that have come out of my mouth more times than I care to remember. Billy and I were recently working some basic Algebra equations. The lightbulb went on, and I put the Algebra to the side and decided to switch to a “lesson” on generalizing.  That has spurred on a rhythm of conversation and observations relating to generalizing!  I feel we are only at the beginning of how this will grow both of our abilities to understand each other and his skill to generalize.  Everything must be taught.
